Description
The Astrolabe Reef Resort and Mai Dive PADI diving operation offer spacious absolute beachfront bungalow accommodation and guest facilities for authentic Fijian holiday experiences. This eco resort is on 47 acres of pristine tropical jungle with a beautiful 1 kilometre long beach. A fringing reef is ideal for snorkelling. The resort has its own tropical gardens and solar power system to be in harmony with the natural surroundings. Suitable for singles, couples, families or groups, enjoy the friendly ’guest house’ type atmosphere. The perfect spot for relaxation or activities. Rediscover a simpler way of life and take home many happy memories.
Location
We are located on Ono Island off the western tip of Kadavu Island in Fiji’s southern island group. Regular flights to Kadavu from either Nadi International Airport or Suva on the mainland make this remote spot easily accessible. We meet you at the Vunisea airstrip and it is then a scenic 1.5 hour boat trip along the northern coastline of Kadavu and across to Ono. You book your transfer from Vunisea when you book your accommodation with us.
Accommodation
Our spacious bungalows are absolute beachfront and constructed in tropical timber colonial style rather than thatched Fijian bure. There is 24 hour electricity, fan cooling, screened windows, private deck, ensuite bathroom, open hot water shower, outdoor chairs and hammock.
Dining & Entertainment
We offer a restaurant and full bar in a central location by the beach - a comfortable place to dine, relax, or enjoy a refreshing beverage. Telephone, Internet, and large LCD TV and Movie Nights are available.
Meals are a delight with a range of fresh fruit and vegetables, freshly caught fish and seafood, home grown herbs and more! Accommodation rates include a full meal package comprising breakfast, lunch and 3-course dinner. Tea and coffee, plus home made juices are available throughout the day. Packed lunches are also available.
Activities
Enjoy all that Kadavu and the Astrolabe Reef have to offer with guided tours and activities. These include scuba diving, kayaking (free use of kayaks and guided kayak tours possible on request), snorkelling off the beach or on a fantastic excursion that includes beach lunch), fishing and specialist fishing charters. Take a sunset cruise to the small islands in the north Astrolabe lagoon and watch the sun setting in the west. On land, there are walking tracks around the coast of Ono Island and to local Fijian villages. Take a half-day trip to Kadavu Island to visit waterfalls. Not to miss is a village visit to gain an insight into the local Fijian culture, with traditional dance and singing and kava ceremony.
Diving
Enjoy magnificent diving on the Astrolabe Reef - the world’s fourth largest reef. We offer Dive Excursions, PADI Dive Training & fantastic ’Manta Experience’. All excursions are 2 tank dives with surface intervals. Rates include boat, PADI Dive master or Instructor, guide, weights and tanks.

"Please DO NOT GO TO MAI DIVE! I don’t want it to become “popular”. If so, I won’t be able to listen, without distraction, to the ocean speaking to me from the reef. Or, snorkel seconds from my cabin to see the colourful fish, sea turtle, and six foot sea snake. Joe may be too busy to show me his garden and teach me about the plants of Fiji, or the values, beliefs and habits of local Fiji folk. The ladies who create the delightful meals from Joe’s organic garden, will be too busy to tell me about their village. And how they have always caught their fish for the weekly village feast. Jason won’t have the time to talk about the diving, the fish and all the possibilities: manta rays, waterfall hike, village dance, weekly ship visit to the village …. The whales may be too harassed to swim over to within 25 feet from the boat to surface and flip their tale. The fish will not be so easy to find on the outer reef. Folks who work there will feel like staff not cousins I’ll feel like I’m in a dude resort - I won’t be able to feel Fiji. So please do me a favour. Stay away.
